Bette Midler Loses Toenail in Texas

Bette Midler suffered a nasty toe injury during her stay in Texas!Singers have long been losing hearts in specific states—Tony Benet lost his in San Francisco, Kevin Fowler’s is in Oklahoma, and the Stone siblings both seem to have displaced theirs along the Californian coast.  Earlier this week, Bette Midler propagated a somewhat altered version of this trend when she left a toenail in Texas.  Instead of singing about it, she tweeted: "My New York toes don't love Texas cowboy boots….Looks like my green thumb has made its way down south!"

Midler journeyed south with an ingrown toenail to speak at a Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas event.  The speech went well, but before the trip was over a bad pedicure and uncomfortable shoes forced her to seek surgical removal of the nail, which had become extremely painful.

An ingrown toenail can cause extreme discomfort and should be examined by a professional.  If you have been suffering from an ingrown toenail, see podiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Confortiwill tend to all of your podiatric concerns.

Ingrown Toenails Causes

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

There are a number of risk factors for ingrown toenails. Some include cutting your nails too short, participating in strenuous sports, diabetes, obesity, and fungal infection. Some are genetically predisposed to ingrown nails, although wearing ill-fitting or damp shoes can exacerbate the problem.

Treatment

There are a number of steps you can take to treat ingrown nails:

-Let your toenails grow out
-Soak the toes in hot water with antibiotic soap or Epsom salts
-Placing a piece of cotton under the affected nail may allow the toe to grow up instead of into the nail bed
-Rest with your feet up

If however, your pain is severe, or you see red streaks running up your leg, you should see a podiatrist. Your podiatrist may make a small incision and remove part of the toe nail to relieve the pressure. A local anesthetic may be used to lessen the discomfort of the operation.  Topical medication may also be prescribed.
