Medical Students Assist the Homeless with Podiatric Services

Medical student Sarah Cebron, center, talks about foot care with Mike Flynn. The University of Colorado had students and staff participate in the Undeserved Interprofessional Health Training and Education program to help provide foot care for 75 homeless. The four year strong program consisted of six faculty members and eighteen students administering podiatric services such as clipping toenails, giving foot-related toiletries and checking for any potential conditions such as fractures, open wounds or bunions.

Nurse practitioner Jan Beezley, who is one of the leaders in this program, believes this program gives students confidence to work in urban areas where patients often contend with poor health conditions. “These students are really mission-driven and motivated,” Beezley said, “they’ve added this on top of med school.” The event took place in the St. Francis Center homeless shelter.

Everyone needs to know how to provide everyday foot care for themselves and their loved ones. For more information, come and see podiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Conforti can educate you and your family about how to properly care for your feet.

Every Day Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. After all, without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks. It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before, for example.

For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops.

Also, wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat. Also make sure that the socks fit properly and are not uncomfortably tight.
