In fact, research shows that pedicures can even increase the likelihood of unhealthy foot problems such as toenail fungus.

"Fungus can get caught up in the motor of whirlpool basins, releasing it again every time the motor revs up,” explains physician Esther Jonas. However, it is still possible to get a pedicure safely. "The ones without the whirlpool effect are much safer, and adding a disposable liner offers double protection" Jonas says.

If you are suffering from fungal toenails, seek the care of podiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Conforti will provide appropriate treatment options for your feet.

Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a persistent problem that can be not only difficult to be rid of, but also embarrassing for the one affected. Fortunately there are several different options when it comes to treating toenail fungus.

  • Soaking toenails in a gentle bleach solution made with vinegar and Listerine
  • Applying anti-fungal treatments containing terbinafine on a regular basis can be very effective. Lamisil is considered to be the most effective but any anti-fungal treatment may be used
  • Applying talcum powder inside shoes or wearing quick-dry wick socks
  • Topical products manufactured specifically for toenail fungus
  • Laser surgery
  • Natural methods such as tea tree oil, alcohol, Vicks VapoRub or hydrogen peroxide

Fungus requires air, moisture, and skin to live. Be sure to wash and dry the affected area thoroughly on a routine basis. Never cut fungal toenails with any sort of scissor. Once fungal nails are treated, throw away any old pairs of shoes in order to avoid the possibility of reinfection.
