Swollen Feet in Pregnant Women Can Be Alleviated by Home Treatment

foot%20massage.jpgSwollen feet are a pretty common occurrence when it comes to pregnancy. Fortunately, there are ways to ease this symptom, all that can be done at home. For example, the buildup of salt in the body is one of the main causes of swollen feet in pregnant women. To have a handle on this, pregnant women should drink at least 7-8 glasses of water each day.

To further decrease swelling and increase blood circulation, massage your feet and ensure that they remain elevated. Soaking feet in either salt water or a solution of water and either peppermint or eucalyptus oil will also help reduce swelling.

Swollen feet can be easily treated at home with simple methods. However, if you would like the assistance of a podiatrist to help relieve swollen feet, speak to Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Conforti will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs and answer any of your related questions.

What foot problems can arise during pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is over-pronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy, but tends to occur in the later stages.

How can I keep my feet healthy during pregnancy?

·         Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly

·         Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot

·         Wear shoes with good arch support

·         Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet

·         Elevate feet if you experience swelling

·         Massage your feet

·         Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
