Statistics gathered by Danish website RunRepeat have concluded that expensive running shoes are often no better than cheaper running shoes. The information was collected from nearly 135,000 consumer reviews gathered over a year. The biggest surprise the reviews showed was that high-priced shoes often had lower ratings. The 10 most expensive running shoes, averaged at a price of $181 per pair, were rated 8.1 percent lower than the 10 cheapest models. These models had an average price of $61.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, see Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Conforti can treat your foot and ankle needs.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even go barefoot
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion

Compared to drugstore inserts, orthotics tend to have many more advantages; people should consider the following five benefits to ankle foot orthotics. Customized orthotics are designed professionally to ensure they personally fit the user. Any specific modifications or changes needed can also be included in a patient’s orthotics design. Orthotics are especially useful in relieving pain not only in the foot, but in the knees and back as well. Custom orthotics can be designed to support the spine and eventually realign it. Lesser foot conditions, such as bunions, can also be managed with the use of orthotics.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Conforti will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain, but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct over arched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you, or if you have a more severe foot issue, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and more severe heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses, and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist on the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain free.

To prevent various foot problems that are known to occur in diabetics such as decreased blood flow to the lower extremities and nerve damage, diabetics should practice regular preventative measures. A simple daily foot care regimen can include washing the feet with mild soap and warm water, carefully drying the feet, and examining the feet for small injuries such as cuts or blisters. Any injuries found should be cleaned with mild soap and water before being covered with an appropriate dressing. Wearing clean socks and shoes will also keep the feet hygienic.

Diabetics must pay special attention to their feet to help prevent any complications. If you have diabetic foot concerns, consult with Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Conforti will provide quality care for your diabetic feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. Diabetes can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, including the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels because blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.
